A tranquil valley of stilt-house villages and vivid green rice fields framed by forested mountains — perfect for a peaceful countryside honeymoon.
Mai Chau is the quiet alternative to Sapa — a valley of emerald rice paddies, traditional stilt-house villages and forested mountains just 3.5 hours from Hanoi. The pace here is gentle, the scenery is intimate, and the White Thai culture runs through everything from the food to the evening dance performances.
Stay at Avana Retreat, where Senna Hilltop Villas have private infinity pools above the valley, or at Mai Chau Ecolodge with its romance bungalows and mountain-view spa. By day, cycle through Lac and Pom Coong villages, cook com lam over open flames, and climb 1,200 steps to Chieu Cave for a panorama from the cave mouth. By evening, watch a traditional Xoe dance, inscribed by UNESCO in 2021.
The valley sits in Hoa Binh province, 145 kilometres southwest of Hanoi on Highway 6. The floor is flat and ringed by mountains rising to 1,536 metres, making it ideal for cycling and gentle trekking. Most couples arrive by private car, stopping at Thung Khe Pass — a white-limestone viewpoint at over 1,000 metres — for their first sight of the valley spread out below.
Lac Village is the cultural heart, home to five White Thai clans who still live in traditional stilt houses raised 1.5 metres on wooden pillars with bamboo floors and leaf roofs. Women weave brocade on looms beneath the houses, and evenings bring the Xoe dance — a thousand-year-old tradition of circling a flame to gongs and drums, inscribed by UNESCO as Intangible Cultural Heritage in December 2021. Pom Coong Village next door is quieter and less visited.
The food is part of the experience. Com lam — sticky rice stuffed into fresh-cut bamboo and slow-roasted over open flames — absorbs the bamboo's natural aroma. Cooking classes at homestays begin with a trip to Mai Chau's morning market. Beyond the valley, Pu Luong Nature Reserve covers 17,600 hectares of limestone karst and cascading terraced fields, with multi-day treks and village homestays.
September to November offers golden rice terraces, warm days and clear skies — October is peak golden-paddy season. February to May brings spring greenery and minimal rain. Avoid December to January when fields are bare between crops, and June to August for the heaviest rainfall.
