Home to the world's largest caves and an ancient karst landscape cloaked in primary jungle — an awe-inspiring adventure honeymoon destination.
Phong Nha is where Vietnam goes underground. The national park holds Son Doong, the largest cave on Earth, alongside Paradise Cave — 31.4 kilometres of cathedral chambers — and Dark Cave, where you zip-line 400 metres over a river into pitch blackness. The karst landscape began forming 400 million years ago, making it the oldest large-scale karst system in Asia.
Stay at Phong Nha Farmstay, the region's original guesthouse with pool and valley views, or at Victory Road Villas for self-contained apartments. Between the caves, cycle through the Bong Lai Valley at sunset, kayak the Son River, and eat home-cooked meals at Pepper House in the rice paddies. It is adventure with soul.
Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park sits in Quang Binh province, 500 kilometres south of Hanoi, inscribed by UNESCO in 2003 for its geological value. Over 220 kilometres of caves and subterranean waterways have been mapped, and the park shelters 2,951 plant species and 800 vertebrate species. Dong Hoi Airport is 45 kilometres east, with daily flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.
Phong Nha Cave is the accessible starting point — a 25-minute sampan ride along the Son River to a cave mouth opening onto one of the world's longest underground rivers at nearly 14,000 metres. Paradise Cave, discovered in 2005, takes things further: a one-kilometre boardwalk descends into a chamber 60 metres high and up to 150 metres wide, with a seven-kilometre guided trek available deeper in. Dark Cave is pure adventure — a 400-metre zip line over the Chay River, a swim into total darkness, and a natural mud bath containing fossils over a million years old.
Son Doong is the bucket-list experience. The world's largest cave holds 38 million cubic metres of space, with 200-metre ceilings and jungle ecosystems growing inside collapsed sections. Only 1,000 permits are issued per year, the four-day expedition costs around 3,000 dollars, and tours are booked years in advance.
March to July is the dry season — warm days of 30 to 35 degrees, clear rivers and all caves open. February and March are especially pleasant. Avoid September to November when heavy monsoon rain can close caves and flood access roads. The Son River is at its clearest from March to May.
Dong Hoi Airport has daily flights from Hanoi (1 hour) and Ho Chi Minh City (1.5 hours). Phong Nha town is 45 kilometres west, about 45 minutes by car. The train also stops at Dong Hoi on the Reunification Express line. We arrange private car transfers for all our honeymoon packages.
