Hanoi, the capital, is the natural starting point — a city of tree-lined boulevards, French colonial architecture and a street-food scene that rivals anywhere in Asia. The Old Quarter, Temple of Literature and Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum are all walkable, and the city's lakeside setting gives it a romantic, unhurried atmosphere.

The imperial city of Hue was Vietnam's capital for over a century, and its vast citadel, royal tombs and pagodas along the Perfume River make it one of the country's most atmospheric destinations. Nearby, the ancient Hindu temples of My Son sit in a jungle-clad valley and are best visited at dawn before the heat builds.

In the south, Ho Chi Minh City offers a completely different energy, with rooftop bars, war museums and buzzing markets.
