Lantern-lit streets, bespoke tailoring and riverside cooking classes make Hoi An Vietnam's most romantic small town.
Hoi An is the place every couple falls for. Narrow streets hung with hundreds of silk lanterns, their glow reflecting off the Thu Bon River after dark. A 15th-century trading port where the architecture is perfectly preserved and the pace of life has barely changed.
Walk the Ancient Town by morning, get measured for a custom suit or silk dress after lunch, and spend the afternoon at An Bang Beach, four kilometres of white sand just 15 minutes away. In the evening, take a wooden boat on the river and release a floating lantern. Four Seasons The Nam Hai and Anantara Hoi An are both within easy reach.
The Ancient Town is a UNESCO World Heritage Site just 45 minutes from Da Nang International Airport, which has direct flights from Singapore, Seoul, Bangkok and across Vietnam. The town sits on the Thu Bon River, its Japanese Covered Bridge so iconic it appears on the 20,000 dong banknote.
Every evening after sunset, the streets transform. Hundreds of silk lanterns light up shopfronts and bridges, and couples drift along the river in small wooden boats. On every full moon, the town switches off its electric lights entirely and glows by candlelight alone during the Lantern Festival, with traditional music and floating candle offerings on the water. It is one of the most naturally romantic settings in Southeast Asia.
The food scene is equally distinctive. Cao lau noodles can only be made here, using water from the ancient Ba Le Well and ash from Cham Island wood. White rose dumplings come from a single family who supplies every restaurant in town. Banh mi at Banh Mi Phuong was called "the best in the world" by Anthony Bourdain. Between meals, couples book cooking classes at Red Bridge or Thuan Tinh Island, cycle to the 400-year-old Tra Que Herb Village, or commission matching outfits from one of hundreds of bespoke tailors delivering in 24 hours.
February to April offers the most comfortable conditions, with warm days of 25 to 30 degrees and minimal rain. May and June are hot but sunny. Avoid October and November when heavy monsoon rainfall can cause light flooding in the Ancient Town.
Da Nang International Airport is 30 kilometres north, with direct flights from Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, Singapore, Seoul and Bangkok. The drive to Hoi An takes 45 to 60 minutes. We arrange private airport transfers for all our honeymoon packages.
