Wartime tunnels, bunkers and memorials along the 17th parallel — a moving historical day trip between Hue and Phong Nha.
The DMZ is Vietnam's most sobering landscape. The 17th parallel once split the country in two, and the land on either side — bunkers, tunnels, firebases — still carries the scars. A full-day tour from Hue covers the key sites in chronological order.
This is not a typical honeymoon stop, but many couples add it for the perspective. Standing inside the Vinh Moc tunnels where entire families lived underground for years, or looking out from the Khe Sanh Combat Base across the valley, you understand something about Vietnam that no museum can convey.
The Demilitarized Zone followed the Ben Hai River along the 17th parallel, a five-kilometre buffer that divided North and South Vietnam from 1954 to 1975. The area saw some of the war's heaviest fighting, and the key sites stretch along a corridor roughly 100 kilometres north of Hue.
Vinh Moc is the standout. An entire coastal village moved underground to survive American bombing, carving a three-level tunnel network 30 metres deep with family quarters, a maternity room and an underground well. Seventeen children were born here during the war. Unlike Cu Chi's tourist-widened tunnels, Vinh Moc is largely original — narrow, low-ceilinged and powerful.
Khe Sanh Combat Base sits in a valley surrounded by forested mountains, the site of a 77-day siege in 1968 that became one of the war's defining battles. A small museum displays photographs, weapons and personal effects. The Hien Luong Bridge over the Ben Hai River was the physical dividing line, now painted in two colours to mark the old border. Most full-day tours from Hue cover all three sites plus the Truong Son National Cemetery, returning by late afternoon.
February to May offers dry, warm weather with temperatures of 24 to 32 degrees. The sites are outdoors with limited shade, so mornings are most comfortable. Avoid October and November when heavy monsoon rain can make rural roads difficult and reduce visibility.
The DMZ sites are spread across Quang Tri province, roughly 80 to 120 kilometres north of Hue. Full-day tours depart Hue at around 6 am and return by 5 pm, covering 250 kilometres in total. We arrange private car and English-speaking guide for all our honeymoon packages.
