Ancient Cham temple towers rising from a jungle valley — a UNESCO World Heritage day trip from Hoi An for history-loving couples.
My Son is a different side of Vietnam. Hidden in a mountain valley 40 kilometres from Hoi An, dozens of red-brick temple towers rise from the jungle floor — the spiritual heart of the Champa kingdom for nearly a thousand years.
The temples were built between the 4th and 13th centuries as Hindu sanctuaries dedicated to Shiva. At dawn, before the tour groups arrive, the mist lifts slowly off the ruins and the only sound is birdsong. It is a powerful, contemplative morning that pairs beautifully with Hoi An's evening romance.
The Champa kingdom ruled central Vietnam for over a millennium, and My Son was its holiest site. Nestled in a valley ringed by forested mountains, the complex once held over 70 Hindu temple towers built from the 4th to the 13th century. What survives — roughly 20 structures across groups B, C and D — is Vietnam's most important Cham archaeological site, inscribed by UNESCO in 1999.
The temples were constructed without mortar, using a technique that archaeologists still debate. Brick walls fitted so precisely that many have stood for 800 years, their surfaces carved with dancing apsaras, mythical makaras and Sanskrit inscriptions. Group B holds the main sanctuary tower, once home to a Shiva lingam, while Group D houses a small museum of recovered sculpture.
The site opens at 6:30 am, and the early-morning slot is by far the best. Mist clings to the valley, the light is soft and warm, and you will have the temples largely to yourself before the Hoi An day-trip buses arrive by 9 am. A short traditional Cham dance performance runs mid-morning. The whole visit takes two to three hours, leaving the afternoon free for Hoi An's tailors and lantern-lit streets.
February to April is best, with warm days of 25 to 30 degrees and minimal rain. The site opens early and morning mist adds atmosphere. May and June are hot but dry. Avoid October and November when heavy monsoon rain can make trails muddy and partially flood the valley.
My Son is 40 kilometres southwest of Hoi An, about 75 minutes by car. Most couples visit as a half-day trip from Hoi An, departing at dawn to avoid the midday heat and crowds. Da Nang International Airport is the nearest hub. We arrange private car transfers for all our honeymoon packages.
