A labyrinth of palm-lined waterways, floating markets and fruit orchards in Vietnam's lush southern delta — ideal for romantic sampan cruises and homestays.
The Mekong Delta is Vietnam at its most lush — 40,000 square kilometres of palm-lined canals, floating markets and fruit orchards producing over 70 per cent of the country's tropical fruit. It is the opposite of a beach honeymoon: mornings start at 5 AM on a sampan watching wholesale boats hoist produce on bamboo poles, afternoons drift through coconut-shaded canals in near silence.
Stay at Mekong Lodge on the Tien River, where 26 bungalows sit among fruit trees, or at a family homestay in Ben Tre's coconut kingdom. Cook caramelised clay-pot fish, taste rambutan straight from the tree, and fall asleep to the sound of water lapping against the hull.
Can Tho is the gateway, 167 kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City by expressway — roughly two and a half hours. Cai Rang Floating Market, six kilometres from the city centre, is the largest in the delta: 300 to 400 boats gather from 5 AM, each hoisting its produce on a tall bamboo pole. It was recognised as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2016.
Ben Tre, 90 kilometres from HCMC, is Vietnam's coconut kingdom — over 79,000 hectares of coconut groves producing 700 million coconuts a year. The narrow canals here are the highlight: hand-rowed sampans glide under a canopy of nipa palms, stopping at candy workshops and honey-tea tastings. Vinh Trang Pagoda in nearby My Tho dates to the 1820s and holds a 32-metre reclining Buddha.
Tra Su Cajuput Forest in An Giang province covers 845 hectares of seasonally flooded wetland sheltering over 140 bird species. During flood season from September to November, rowing boats navigate through the submerged forest canopy — one of the delta's most extraordinary experiences. The Mekong produces over 50 per cent of Vietnam's total rice output.
December to April is the dry season — clear skies, 30-degree days and calm rivers ideal for boat trips. September to November brings the flood season, spectacular at Tra Su Forest but limiting some land routes. Avoid May to August for heavy afternoon downpours.
Can Tho is 167 kilometres from Ho Chi Minh City, about 2.5 hours by expressway. Can Tho Airport has flights from Hanoi. Ben Tre is 90 kilometres from HCMC. We arrange private car transfers and boat tours for all our honeymoon packages.
