Golden sand dunes, a barefoot fairy stream and Vietnam's best kitesurfing make Mui Ne a laid-back honeymoon with real adventure.
Mui Ne is Vietnam's most unexpected coastal destination. Instead of just beach, you get rolling desert dunes that glow amber at sunset, a miniature red sandstone canyon you wade through barefoot, and a working fishing village where hundreds of round basket boats bob in the bay at dawn.
The pace here is slow and sun-soaked. Mornings disappear on the beach or at a kite school, afternoons at the pool, and evenings at open-air seafood restaurants along Bo Ke Street. Anantara, Victoria and Mia Resort line the coast, each with the kind of unhurried character that suits a honeymoon perfectly.
The 200-kilometre drive from Ho Chi Minh City takes around three hours, passing through dragon fruit plantations before the coastline opens up. The main strip runs along Nguyen Dinh Chieu Street, a single road lined with resorts, kite schools, restaurants and coconut palms stretching for ten kilometres along the shore.
What makes Mui Ne different is the landscape. The Red Sand Dunes sit fifteen minutes from town, their pink-tinged slopes turning deep amber at sunset. Further out, the White Sand Dunes at Bau Trang feel genuinely Saharan, with quad bikes carving tracks across an empty expanse beside lotus-filled lakes. Between the two, the Fairy Stream is a surreal two-kilometre wade through ankle-deep water between towering walls of orange and red sandstone.
Phan Thiet, the neighbouring city, is one of Vietnam's two great fish sauce capitals. The local food reflects that heritage. Muc mot nang is sun-dried squid grilled over coals with chilli and lime. Lau tha is a communal fish hotpot with green mango and banana flower. In the evenings, the beachfront bars at Pogo Beach Club and Sailing Club keep things low-key, with sunset cocktails, live music and feet in the sand.
November to March is the sweet spot, with dry weather, warm days of 25 to 29 degrees and consistent winds for kitesurfing. April and May are hot but still dry. Avoid August and September when monsoon rains are heaviest, though showers tend to be brief.
The nearest airport is Ho Chi Minh City (3 hours by private car, 200 km). A train runs daily from Saigon to Phan Thiet station in about 3.5 hours. We arrange private car transfers from HCMC or connect Mui Ne with other destinations along the coast.
