Turquoise coves, ancient Cham towers and barely a tourist in sight make Qui Nhon Vietnam's most rewarding under-the-radar beach honeymoon.
Qui Nhon is where Vietnam's coast still feels undiscovered. Turquoise coves hidden behind mountain headlands, 11th-century Cham towers on hilltops, and a fishing village of just 100 people on a crescent of golden sand. It is the antidote to the busier beach resorts further south.
The accommodation matches the setting. Anantara Quy Nhon has just 26 private pool villas on a secluded cove, with a dedicated villa host and candlelit dinners under the stars. AVANI next door shares the same private beach at a gentler price point. Days here are unhurried, evenings are quiet, and the seafood is some of the cheapest and freshest on the coast.
Binh Dinh province sits on the south-central coast between Da Nang and Nha Trang, with Phu Cat Airport receiving daily flights from both Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. The city itself is small and walkable, with a long beachfront promenade and a fishing fleet visible from almost every vantage point.
The star attraction is Ky Co Beach, a crescent cove of two-tone turquoise water enclosed on three sides by mountains. You reach it across Thi Nai Bridge, Vietnam's second-longest sea bridge at seven kilometres, or by canoe from the dramatic Eo Gio cliffs where ocean winds funnel between two headlands. Further along the coast, Bai Xep is a tiny fishing village that Business Insider named one of Asia's hidden gems, with catch-of-the-day cooked to order on the beach at sunset.
History runs deep here. Qui Nhon sits near Vijaya, the former capital of the Champa kingdom. Binh Dinh province has 14 surviving Cham tower complexes, with the 11th-century Banh It Towers the most impressive, a hilltop cluster of four sandstone towers that made it into "1001 Architectural Works You Must See in Your Lifetime." After a day of exploring, the city's street food scene delivers. Banh xeo tom nhay, crispy turmeric pancakes filled with live jumping prawns, is the local signature and tastes nothing like the version anywhere else in Vietnam.
March to June offers the driest weather with warm days of 27 to 32 degrees and calm seas for boat trips to Ky Co. January and February are pleasant but cooler. Avoid September to November when heavy monsoon rain peaks at over 500 mm in October.
Phu Cat Airport has daily flights from Ho Chi Minh City (1 hour) and Hanoi (1 hour 30 minutes). The airport is 35 kilometres from the city, about 40 minutes by car. We arrange private transfers for all our honeymoon packages.
